IRF:
I've always enjoyed selected items from Newcastle's AV festival in previous years. This year I am contemplating (but undecided about)...

1st-31st March 2012

International Festival of Art, Technology, Music and Film

AV Festival presents two of its opening weekend concerts at The
Sage Gateshead. The whole Festival is inspired by John Cage’s
composition ASLSP (As SLow aS Possible), so we are delighted to
celebrate the Cage 100 Anniversary year. The Festival’s focus on
minimalism brings US musicians Phill Niblock and Yoshi Wada to
the region for the first time to perform exciting new work.

Phill Niblock: The Movement of People Working
Friday 2nd March, 7.45pm

This leading US minimalist composer and filmmaker, presents his
music and films simultaneously. The films focus on labourers
working in locations including Peru, Mexico, China and Japan.
His slowly evolving music of long tones echoes the workers’
repetition.

Lament for John Cage
Saturday 3rd March, 8pm

In Cage's anniversary year, this evening focuses on slowness and
duration, across six distinctive performances: Cage's 'Postcard
from Heaven' and 'Ryoanji'; world premieres including 'A Cage of
Stars' composed by Phill Niblock and 'The Lament of John Cage' by
Yoshi Wada.

Hanne Darboven: Requiem

Sunday 4th March, 8pm at St Thomas the Martyr Church, Newcastle

This UK premiere of Darboven’s ‘Requiem’ is performed by Thomas
Dahl, Director of Music at St Peter’s Church in Hamburg.
‘Requiem’ is her extraordinary composition for organ, which is
based on all the dates of the 20th century (from 1 January 1900
to 31 December 1999).

Festival Music Programme

There are more concerts throughout the Festival, including new
commissions and UK premieres by musicians including: Attila
Csihar (vocalist from Sunn O))) and Mayhem), Steven Stapleton’s
Sleep Concert, The Caretaker, Chris Carter & Cosey Fanni Tutti.

Don't miss the Phill Niblock concert. His music is quite unique and there aren't that many chances to hear it as he prefers it to be heard, ie. accompanied by his films.
