I've recently (although not just recently) had poor experiences trying to order music from both musicroom and chappel. Can anyone recommend any reliable alternatives? (This is for fairly standard repertoire, not necessarily freak-out mod stuff  :laughter3: )

Another one gone. What a miserable year...  :(

Very interested to hear what folks have to say about him. I have plenty of things myself, but will wait till later...

...and the grim culling of 2012 continues...

I guess we take the riches of Indian music for granted now, but the guy introduced many to them with all the virtuosity, expressiveness and spiritual integrity that can characterise that music, and at a time when the world seemed to need it. I was bowled over, as a teen, when I first encountered it.

Unbelievably, just when we thought he never would go, he's gone.

An astonishing and unquestionably influential life, and I'd love to hear from folks here about what he meant to them personally. I met him, only once, and remember the warmth. So many wonderful  pieces - not all, for me, but the batting average is pretty damn high. And, I mean, nearly 104??!!

The 'controversial', 'influential' 'pick your own epithet' art critic has died. He certainly made me think about art differently and could write like a dream.

Literature and Poetry / Books that changed your musical world...
« on: February 25, 2012, 07:14:40 pm »
Which book(s) have changed the way you think about/ listen to music?

I'm not necessarily thinking of books about music here. For example, in my own case I'd have to cite John Berger's Ways of Seeing, which is about fine art on the face of it. But ever since a teacher at graduate school put it on the reading list for the course he was teaching (the quirkiest and most inspiring I think I've ever taken) and suggested we read it replacing the word 'art' with 'music', and 'seeing' with 'hearing' etc. I've been alive to so many more dimensions and aspects of the way music works, functions in the world and so on.
