Im currently trying to work my way through some sonnets, so maybe a thread might be appropriate...

I am having more trouble than I thought with grammatical coherence of them - take the couplet from sonnet numero 2

  When forty winters shall besiege thy brow,
And dig deep trenches in thy beauty's field,
Thy youth's proud livery so gazed on now,
Will be a totter'd weed of small worth held:
Then being asked, where all thy beauty lies,
Where all the treasure of thy lusty days;
To say, within thine own deep sunken eyes,
Were an all-eating shame, and thriftless praise.
How much more praise deserv'd thy beauty's use,
If thou couldst answer 'This fair child of mine
Shall sum my count, and make my old excuse,'
Proving his beauty by succession thine!
   This were to be new made when thou art old,
   And see thy blood warm when thou feel'st it cold.

What's going on with the tenses in the first line of the couplet? (also, what does "this" refer to? The child? I don't really get it, and the paraphrases don't make it any clearer to me either. The Poem seems to be encouraging the guy to have kids at an early age rather than leaving it until late.)

reading cameron's guardian essay here, I find myself doing a double-take on the following paragraph:

So the big society doesn't apply to one area of policy, but many. For example, if neighbours want to take over the running of a post office, park or playground, we will help them. If a charity or a faith group want to set up a great new school in the state sector, we'll let them. And if someone wants to help out with children, we will sweep away the criminal record checks and health and safety laws that stop them.

(emphasis mine)

So, so far I haven't seen anything very damning, just lots of really interseting stuff.  This I found a little unexpected.

Now that I've waved goodbye to my physical music collection, I'm appreciating spotify a lot more.  Its music collection seems to have grown a lot larger since I last looked about.   If you are listening to something on spotify, and idly want to share links to tracks, do so here.  I'm not listening to anything interesting right now, though, so someone else will have to start the ball rolling...

I hope I won't get too many cabbage thrown my way for this, but...

I'm moving right now, and am going through the slightly traumatic process of getting rid of all of my books/non-budget CDs (no point advertising the budget stuff - will try offload it to someone local), and think this is the place where I'm most likely to get the more obscure things good homes : )

So, there's some fancy but auto-exported that's been generated here.  It's quite awkward to browse, so there're more boring lists here of CDs and books.  [Some of the labelling might be incomplete/inadequate - so please shoot with any questions).

Book-highlightwise, I have Down Among the Dead Men by van Dieren, which is probably the most awkward book to get one's hands on.  Interesting music-wise, I have a bunch of Kapustin that I had to order in from Japan, and I can thoroughly recommend the recording of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's well-tempered guitar by Claudio Piastra.

If anyone wants to give any of these a home, just PM me with an offer - I'll pretty much do first come first served (the alternative being an a combination of abebook's buyback service and the trash can for what they don't want) . I'll add Post&Packaging to the offered price send off (letting them know before what this will be), and whoever I send stuff off to will pay me via paypal (which can offer refunds if things happen to get lost in the mail).  I think this is straightforward...
