*11571.  Thanks, Jim.  A timely reminder that I must revisit my off-air DVD of Gawain, ROH, 1991, BBC 2, -incl the mention of 'stereo' in the logo- with John Tomlinson in his prime as the Green Knight.
How shall I put it, Stanley... perhaps I should just say that you have my attention!  :naughty:

This evening: NO by Richard Barrett and Ferneyhough's sixth string quartet.

I love both these formidable compositions.

Just now - Richard Barrett - Codex XIX.

Now - Debussy - Sonata for cello and piano.

Both awesome.

Weather Report's 'Boogie Woogie Waltz'.

It's such a sick piece of music. So sick it's ridiculous.

Actually, that whole album, 'Sweetnighter' is really awesome. I've listened to it twice today.

Now I'm listening to 'Black Market'.

Man, I love Weather Report.

Last night after Black Market:

Mysterious Traveller by Weather Report

This morning so far:

Tale Spinnin and Weather Report the second eponymous album by Weather Report.

Now - Dark Matter.

Mysterious Traveller is ok, but really not as good as Sweetnighter. Tale Spinnin is better, but often I think with Weather Report the strongest track is first and the rest of the album isn't quite as good - on Sweetnighter this is the case but how could is not be? Plus while 'Boogie Woogie Waltz' is obviously unsurpassably great, and this sort of leaves a strong afterglow, the other pieces are really good too, they are more distinctive than much of the music on Mysterious Traveller or Tale Spinnin. On Weather Report, the first track is again much stronger than the rest of the album - but there are other good songs on that album although not quite as distinctive. Black Market is great with distinctive music throughout.

Currently being pulverised by Boulez's second sonata, Pollini.  :naughty:

Ferneyhough's fifth string quartet.

A feature of this and other quartets of his is the alternation between a kind of fragility and a kind of exuberant aggression (obviously lots of other expression-types). Something about the use of microtones and those nestled tuplets which sounds ethereal - and of course the performer psychology, having to take so much care to play accurately, there's something vulnerable about it... but it can sound thrilling.

Only listened to it a couple of times when I purchased it a few months back, but I'm finally revisiting Sorabji's 140 minute Symphonic Nocturne, played by Lukas Huisman. Glorious stuff...

Mahavishnu Orchestra, Visions of the Emerald Beyond, specifically 'Eternity's Breath'.

Sounds better than I remember it. His tone is just to die for. I just wish there was more of his soloing!
